Chapter 41:
The chill outside the emergency room was palpable.
Kristopher and Darren positioned themselves at opposite ends of the hallway, arms folded, expressions
unreadable.
Periodically, their eyes met, adding to the palpable tension.
A nurse passing by caught the hostile atmosphere and reminded them firmly, “Both of you are adults. Behave
accordingly! No fighting in these halls! Your actions have already harmed patients. Another incident, and I'm
calling the police.”
Both men exhaled sharply and looked away.
Moments later, the ER doors burst open as a doctor stepped out, her expression grave.
Both men moved toward her in unison.
“How is she?”
“How's Belinda?”
The doctor's voice was cold. “She’s dealing with severe abdominal pain. The blow to her stomach did significant
damage. We've managed her care, but the pain lingers.”
She eyed the two imposing men. “One of you can assist the nurse in moving her to her room.”
As she was talking, both men rushed for the ER door.
The doctor quickly stepped in their path, raising an eyebrow. “Just one of you may enter.”

The doctor gave a nod, starting to lower her arm to allow him passage, when Kristopher intervened, his
expression tense. “I'm Belinda’s husband. | should go in.”
“You're her husband?” The doctor eyed him sharply, a trace of disbelief in her tone. “Interesting. It’s quite rare to
see you here.”
Belinda had been battling stomach cancer for several months, yet today marked the first ther doctor had
witnessed her husband at the hospital.
Kristopher bristled at the doctor's tone, which dripped with sarcasm. “I'm busy. It's not possible forto be
here every tshe has sailments,” he snapped.
“Ailments?” the doctor replied with a scoff. “It seems you hardly know your wife.” With a resigned gesture, she
dropped her arm. “Very well, go ahead.”
Kristopher hurried into the ER where Belinda was lying on the bed, her complexion deathly pale.
They had been together for three years, but he had never seen her this vulnerable.
The realization that his own actions had contributed to her condition filled him with remorse. “I'm sorry. | never
meant to hurt you...”
“It doesn’t matter,” Belinda said, her voice calm, a soft smile playing on her lips. “I know you didn’t mean it.”
She had loved him deeply for so long that she could read him like an open book.
He didn’t return her love, but he wouldn't intentionally harm her.
Her serenity pierced Kristopher’s heart.
He sighed and, with the nurse's assistance, pushed her gurney out of the emergency room.
“How are you feeling, Belinda?” Darren approached them swiftly, his face lined with worry. “Is your stomach still
hurting? It’s my fault. | should have seen that he wouldn't appreciate you. | didn’t protect you well enough.”
Darren shot a pointed look at Kristopher.
“What are you implying?” Kristopher asked, his brow furrowing. “It was just an accident when | bumped into her.
Don’t cause more .”
“Cause ? Or are you just looking for another way to mistreat Belinda?” Darren stood his ground, anger
flaring. “The Cox family has a history of pushing her around! I've seen it with my own eyes!”
“You...”
“Darren...”
As tensions between the men threatened to boil over again, Belinda weakly lifted her head to look at Darren.
“You're hurt as well. Go tend to your injuries. I'll be okay here by myself. Don’t worry about me.”
Darren's face tightened, and he opened his mouth to talk, but he stopped when he caught Belinda’s earnest
look.
He exhaled deeply after a pause. “Belinda, I'm leaving for your sake. Take care of yourself, and letknow if
you need anything.”
He then cast a sharp glance at Kristopher. “If you harm her again, | won't let it slide!”
With those words, Darren walked away.
“He made the right decision,” Kristopher muttered as he maneuvered Belinda’s bed toward the ward, his eyes
fixed on Darren’s fading silhouette. “If you hadn’t stepped in, | wouldn't have spared him.”
Belinda closed her eyes, drained. “I let him leave because | know you're too stubborn to back down. That's all.”
Kristopher abruptly stopped pushing the gurney, a scowl forming on his face. “So, you're concerned about him,
protecting him?”
