Chapter 104: The Unraveling Truth
Chapter 104: The Unraveling Truth
(Marcus Blackwood’s POV)
Holding his coffee mug tightly, my voice was low and hoarse. “Do | look like I'm favoring her?”
Heidi Cross shifted uncomfortably in her chair, her eyes darting betweenand Amber Stone. The fear in her
expression was palpable.
“1... | thought you were,” she stammered. “Sophia always spoke as if she had your complete support.”
“What exactly did she tell you?” | demanded, setting the mug down with enough force to make her flinch.
Heidi's hands trembled as she spoke. “She said you wouldn't interfere with her affairs. That you disliked the
Blackthorne family and wouldn't blanyone for targeting them.”
The words hitlike physical blows. Each syllable revealed the depth of Sophia’s manipulation,
“She toldElena was just a political arrangement, Heidi continued desperately. “That you were only waiting
for the right moment to sever the bond and be with her instead.”
My jaw clenched so tightly | thought it might c***k. The coffee mug in my hands began to show hairline fractures
from my grip.
“She made it sound like | was doing you a favor,” Heidi whispered. “Like you wanted the Blackthorne family gone
but couldn't act directly because of pack politics.”

The silence that followed was deathly. | could hear Amber Stone’s careful breathing, the distant hum of the
building's ventilation system, even Heidi's rapid heartbeat.
After several minutes that felt like hours, I finally spoke. “Leave.”
Heidi's relief was visible as she practically fled from the command chamber. Her footsteps echoed
corridor until they faded completely.
| sat behind my desk for a long time, my face clouded with gloom and a hint of weariness. The weight of Heidi's
revelations pressed down onlike a physical burden.

Did | really appear to others as someone who indulged Sophia Rivers? Had my guilt over our past relationship
blindedto the damage | was causing?
The thought that Elena must also seethat way sent a sharp pain through my chest. No wonder she hated
me. No wonder she looked atwith such cold indifference.
| couldn't tell if the pain was from the knife wound on my waist or from my heart. Both seemed to throb in
unison.
“Amber,” | called out, my voice rough with exhaustion.
She looked up from her tablet, her expression carefully neutral. “Yes, Alpha?”
“How do you think others see my relationship with Sophia?”
Amber Stone glanced at me, her usual diplomatic mask slipping slightly. “You're finally realizing how
outrageous your indulgence of her was.”

The blunt honesty in her words was like a slop to the face. But | needed to hear it.
“Everyone could see it except you,” she continued. “The way you protected her, made excuses for her behavior,
allowed her to undermine your mate's authority”
| closed my eyes, the full scope of my failures becoming clear. How many times had | chosen Sophia's comfort
over Elena’s dignity?
“Your mate endured six years of humiliation because of your misplaced loyalty,” Amber added quietly “Six years
of being treated like the other woman in her own mating bond.”
The drive back to Moonhaven Estate felt endless. Every mile stretched like an eternity as | wrestled with the
truth of what | had become.
| returned to Moonhaven Estate late, finding the Great Hall shrouded in darkness. The familiar space felt cold and
unwelcoming without Elena’s presence
| turned on the lights and made my way to the Master Suite, hoping to find her asleep. But when | tried the
door, it was locked.
| frowned, remembering the times Elena had lockedout before. She had always harbored resentment toward
me, and | had assumed this was just another manifestation of that anger.
Rather than wake her, | decided to give her space. | made my way to the Shadow Wing Guest Suite, the
unfamiliar bed feeling like a punishment | deserved.
The next morning, | went to the Master Suite, hoping to talk to Elena. | needed to apologize, to explain, to
somehow begin making amends for years of neglect.
| knocked for a long tbut received no response. The silence from within was absolute, unnatural.
| also noticed that Catherine Hayes wasn’t at work. The absence of our trusted housekeeper added to my
growing unease.
Sensing something amiss, | called Catherine directly. Her voice was hesitant when she answer
“Alpha Blackwood? is everything alright?”
“Where are you, Catherine? Why aren’t you at the estate?”
“Elena askedto take two days off,” she explained. “She said she needed stalone.”
The words sent ice through my veins
. I hung up and retrieved the spare key to the Master Suite with
trembling hands.
