She assumed Gabriel had already eaten breakfast, so she didn’t ask.
After eating alone, she went back upstairs and made her usual phone call, chatting for a good while before hanging up.
The children were starting their lessons today, so Sylvia grabbed an umbrella and headed to the library to join them.
In the entrance hall, she saw Grace and Gabriel talking in low voices. She could just faintly make out what they were saying.
“The mountain road was washed out and still isn’t fully repaired. A car can’t get through, which means they'd have to hike. It's too
dangerous.”

Sylvia walked over. “What's wrong? Did something happen?”
Gabriel's eyes fell on her, and his brow furrowed before he even spoke. “Didn't | tell you to wear something warmer?”
Sylvia had changed, but she was still in a simple, thin black dress.
His words caught her off guard. In front of Grace, she didn’t want to argue, so she just said, “I'll change when | get back.”
Grace's gaze flickered between them, a slight smile playing on her lips. She explained to Sylvia, “One of the students, his
grandfather is very ill. He's been in and out of consciousness, but he keeps asking for his grandson. The family called to see if it
was possible to send the boy hto see him one last time.”
She glanced at Gabriel. “Gab wants to take him, but with the rain, I'm worried about the mountain trail.”
“What's to worry about?” Gabriel's tone was decisive. “It’s settled. Tell the boy to get ready. We're leaving shortly.”
With that, he started walking toward the door.
Sylvia turned and followed him. “I'll go with you.”
Gabriel didn’t look back. “No.”
“Why not?” Sylvia hurried to catch up. “Don’t you know how terrified those children are of you? If you take him by yourself, the
poor boy will be on edge the entire way.”
