Allison hesitated, caught off guard by his question.

She mumbled a soft, "Yeah."

"He knows you like blue, too," Joshua said, the hint of a smile tugging at his lips—though his tone was sharp

enough to cut. "That's nice."

Allison pressed her lips together and glanced at the bouquet of blue flowers sitting on the passenger seat.

Joshua's taste had always been impeccable. He never picked flowers at random—this bouquet was exactly her

vibe.

Joshua noticed her staring at the flowers and spoke in a flat, unreadable voice. "I was going to give them to you,

but since you already have flowers, | guess these are just extra."

Allison didn't know what to say. She hesitated, then offered awkwardly, "Well... | should get going?"

She turned, ready to leave.

"Wait!" Joshua called out, his voice suddenly urgent. "It's not like two bouquets are too much to carry. Why don't

you just take these, too? They're just taking up space in the car."

With her back to him, Allison couldn't help the small smile that played at her lips.

She turned around and met his eyes. "Taking up space, huh?"

He nodded, his voice low. "If you don't want them, I'll just toss them."

Allison let out a quiet laugh. "No way. They're too pretty to throw out. I'll take them."

Joshua got out, walked around the car, and handed her the flowers.

Allison hugged both bouquets to her chest. "Thanks."

His eyes seemed to darken just a bit when he heard her say it.

She noticed, but didn't comment. At this point, with where things stood between them, politeness was all she

could give.

Allison climbed back into her car, balancing the two bouquets in her arms.

Linda looked over, eyebrows raised in surprise. "Allie, where'd the second bouquet cfrom? Who gave them

to you?"

From their parking spot, neither Linda nor Javier could see Joshua's car, so they'd missed the whole exchange.

Javier, sitting up front, glanced back at Allison but stayed quiet.

Knowing how Javier felt about the Fisher family—and how much he disapproved of her and Joshua—Allison didn't

want to stir up trouble. She just said, "A friend."

Linda nodded. "Oh, okay." She could tell Allison didn't want to talk about it, so she let it drop.

Javier said nothing, just told the driver, "Let's go."

When they got back to the Owens' house, Lizzy was on the couch in the living room, glued to Peppa Pig on the

TV.

The second she saw her big sister walk in, Lizzy lit up with a huge smile. She jumped off the couch, Mary Janes

tapping on the floor, and raced over to throw her arms around Allison, shouting, "Sissy!"

Allison laughed and gently patted Lizzy's head. "Did you miss me, Lizzy?"

Lizzy answered in her sweet, clear little voice. "I did!"

"So soon?" Allison asked.

Alice nodded. "I have patients back hwho've already booked appointments."

"Alright. What time's your flight? I'll have the driver take you."

"Three in the afternoon."

Javier chimed in, also in English. "Thank you, Dr. Alice. We really appreciate everything you've done for Lizzy."

"You're very welcome, sir."
