Chapter236

With a loud crash, the car slammed into a roadside tree, airbags bursting open.

Maureen nearly got knocked out, her phone tumbling under the seat. Luckily, the slow speed spared her injuries.

The car wouldn't start now. Maureen turned on the hazard lights.

She couldn't reach her phone no matter how she tried. With no choice, she decided to get out and look for help.

Meanwhile, after hearing the commotion through the phone, Geoffrey called Maureen’s nagain but got only

silence.

The blizzard meant no cars were out tonight.

Maureen waited forever but saw no passing vehicles, shivering violently in the cold.

Since returning to Small Town without any threats around, she’d told Justin not to constantly watch over her.

Maureen had no choice but to trudge halone, planning to call a tow truck after the snow stopped tomorrow

morning.

Each step felt heavy, her entire body numb with cold.

No houses lined this stretch of road; she remembered having at least two or three kilometers left.

Forcing herself forward, the biting cold worsened her ear condition until even the wind’s howl grew faint.

She knew her hearing loss had progressed.

After ten minutes, a white expanse blurred her vision. Dizzy and disoriented, she collapsed into the snow.

Conscious but dazed, she instinctively covered her belly. Struggling up, her legs refused to

move.

“So cold...”

Muttering to herself, she didn’t notice the tall figure approaching through the blizzard.

Deatened, she remained unaware as Geoffrey called her name.

Only when his arms wrapped around her did she dimly realize he'd come.

If she remembered right, hwas still a kilometer away. How had he navigated here blind?

“Geoffrey, I'm so cold...”

Questions forgotten, she could only whimper about the chill.

Without a word, he scooped her up and turned toward home.

“You knew it was freezing. Why cback so late?”

He couldn't help speaking on their

way

back.

Maureen couldn't make out his words, clutching his clothes as her hand instinctively reached under his layers:

“So cold...”

She'd touched him before anyway. What was one more time?

She was shivering violently.

A hand, cold as if fresh out of a freezer, pressed against Geoffrey's chest.

Geoffrey halted mid-step, feeling no chill-only his blood boiling through his veins.

Maureen's other hand, fumbling for place, accidentally brushed his face. Burning hot.

“Geoffrey, you're running a fever.”

Her voice weak as she spoke.

In such bitter cold, his face burned like fire-undeniable proof of fever.

Geoffrey's crimson lips pressed into a thin line, Adam's apple bobbing slightly: “What | said last night still

stands.”

Maureen saw his lips move but caught no words, murmuring absently: “Mm-hmm.”

Geoffrey quickened his pace.

Zoe took in their snow-dusted figures, hastily offering towels: “What took you so long?”

Geoffrey accepted one, brushing snow from Maureen's coat.

Maureen moved stiflly, reassuring Zoe:

“Zoe, it’s late. You should rest. My car broke down

on the road tonight.”

Avoiding mention of her deafness to spare worry, she added hastily.

“Alright, draw a hot bath later.”

Zoe didn’t retire but shuffled toward the kitchen to brew ginger tea for Maureen's chill.

Geoffrey took Maureen back to the room, placed her on the sofa, and casually found sclean clothes.

“I'll heat the bathwater. Take your clothes off and change after bathing.”

Watching his lips and movements, Maureen thought he just wanted her to change clothes.

“Okay, you go change too.”

Geoffrey hummed in response, his voice magnetic.

He didn’t change clothes. Instead, he grabbed a bathrobe and went straight to Maureen's bathroom to shower.

Unable to hear anything, Maureen stiffly changed into clean clothes, curled up on the sofa wrapped in a blanket,

motionless.

The underfloor heating made the room cozy. Soon, drowsiness weighed her eyelids down.

Geoffrey emerged wearing only a towel and lifted her.

Suspended mid-air, Maureen's eyes flew open. Her hand brushed his firm arm, jolting her awake.

“What are you doing?

Putdown now.”

“The bath’s ready. Taking you to soak.”

Geoffrey said.

Maureen couldn't make out his words: “Just putdown and leave.”

Geoffrey tightened his hold and carried her into the bathroom.

“Why haven't you undressed?”

Assuming she was shy, he started helping.

Maureen urgently stopped him: “Geoffrey, don’t you

dare!”

Geoffrey chuckled: “Didn't you ask for this when we got back?”

His hand roamed freely, then suddenly landed on Maureen's ear, touching the hearing aid she

wore.

“What are you wearing?”

All Maureen wanted was to kick him out. She raised her hand and slapped him across the face.

“I can’t hear you. Better not mess with me!”

Geoffrey’s handsface stiffened.

Just then, knocking echoed at the door.

“Reenie, what's wrong?”

Geoffrey threw on a robe and opened the door to meet Zoe's icy glare: “What did you do to Reenie?”
