Still, he didn’t press the matter. He respected Jessica's choices. As long as Nyla didn’t stir up trouble for Jessica

When the two of them got home, Melvin told Jessica to go freshen up first. He dropped onto the sofa, pulled out
his phone, and noticed several missed calls and messages. Three were from Turner, his father. Two were from
Kate, his mother. They had both left messages too.
Turner's read, “Getting gutsy now, huh? Can't even be bothered to tellsomething as big as getting a

Melvin stared at the screen, unfazed. He exited the chat and checked another message.
He didn’t remember much from his childhood, but he did recall that one of the reasons Kate left Turner was
because the man was too controlling—loud and arrogant, with little talent to back it up.
Melvin understood her decision. Still, a small part of him couldn't help feeling abandoned. She must've thought
that dragging a child around would make it harder to find someone new.
Melvin pressed his lips together and opened the next chat—Kate’s.
She had written, “Congrats. If you get the chance, maybe bring your girlfriend over for dinner sometime?”
