Jessica lowered her head and quietly ate her food, confused by the sudden tension. She didn’t understand what
she had done to deserve Kate's dislike.
“Jessica,” Kate suddenly spoke.
Jessica lifted her head naturally. “Yes?”
“Id like to talk to Melvin privately. Would you mind giving us a moment?” Kate asked, not bothering to soften the
request. She knew Melvin would be leaving soon.
“She’s family to me. There's nothing you need to hide,” Melvin said before Jessica could speak, his expression
cold. “If you have something to say, say it.”
Kate looked uncomfortable, shifting her gaze toward Jessica. That look said everything. She had expected Jessica
to excuse herself, to be polite and step away.

back.”
Melvin still didn’t let go. He knew she wouldn't really ignore him. But if Kate wanted to speak alone, it could only
be about Jessica.
