Chapter 157 Evelyn could never mistake that ring.

It was the heirloom ring that Deborah had given to her mother, Naomi, back in the day. At the time, Naomi wore it as her wedding ring. Later, when the Harrisons ran into financial difficulties, Derek sold the ring to raise funds for the company.

Naomi had been heartbroken over it for a long time.

Derek had never discussed it with her. By the tNaomi found out the ring was gone, it was already too late- there was no way to trace it anymore.

Even after their relationship eventually fell apart, neither of them had been able to let it go.

Deborah was unwilling to bring it up. Even so, Evelyn knew that, deep down, Deborah never let it go.

She never imagined that after so many years, she would see it again at a charity gala. What belonged to the Reeds would never be truly lost.

Even Justine had noticed the sharp shift in Evelyn's mood.

A faint mist clouded Evelyn's eyes, and the hand holding the bidding paddle trembled slightly. The moment the auctioneer's voice fell, she wanted to raise her paddle. However, Evelyn didn't have the chance to speak.

A hand rose from the front row. "15 million." Evelyn turned in surprise.

Tiffany smiled elegantly as she looked at the item on stage with a determined expression.

She gently leaned toward Lucas, saying, "This ring is very finely crafted. Antiques from decades or even centuries ago are extraordinary. The craftsmanship today cannot compare." Lucas glanced at the enlarged image on the screen and paused. "Bid for it if you like it." Tiffany smiled softly. "Alright." Evelyn didn't miss the two of them whispering to each other.

Her lips pressed into a tight line. Though she didn't know what Lucas had said, she had an ominous feeling about it.

Evelyn steadied herself and spoke up, "16 million!" As her bid rang out, several gazes turned her way.

Tiffany narrowed her eyes slightly when she saw who it was, the corners of her lips twitching faintly. She ignored her.

Beside her, Mason clicked his tongue. Why did Evelyn always have to copy Tiffany the moment she did something? Flynn frowned with displeasure and muttered, "See? Evelyn always has to go against Ms. Moore. She has to fight her for everything. How insecure is she around Ms. Moore?" Tiffany had also heard Flynn's words.

She gave a silent laugh before saying, "20 million." Evelyn's grip tightened around the paddle. "25 million." With Lucas' wealth backing her, Tiffany was always able to raise the bid with ease. "30 million." It felt as though countless fine needles were piercing through Evelyn's flesh, and her back went unbelievably stiff.

She wondered whether she could keep up.

Her personal savings weren't particularly substantial. The bulk of it cfrom the compensation she received when the military E!!! requisitioned her U.N2 combat drone research project. Even with everything combined, she only had around 50 million dollars. Right now, she needed to secure her mother's wedding ring and still have funds set aside for the treatment of Leonard and herself. There was no other way.

Evelyn's lips had lost their color. However, she had no choice but to go all in and throw out her maximum bid. "40 million!"

Before Naomi passed, she repeatedly apologized she was sorry to Deborah for entrusting herself to the wrong person and for losing the Reeds' heirloom ring. At that moment, she had died with regret in her heart. The only amount she could spend was 40 million. The remaining ten million had to be saved for treatment and the long recovery that would follow.

She couldn't afford to be willful.

When Evelyn called out 40 million dollars, even Tiffany furrowed her brows. She did She did like the ring, but its actual value couldn't possibly exceed 20 million dollars. 30 million dollars was already the upper limit. Did Evelyn not know its worth? Was she inflating the price on purpose? Tiffany looked toward Lucas and said, "Any higher and it's not worth it. Money should be spent wisely."
