My breath cin shallow gasps, shock and anxiety overwhelming me, yet somewhere in the back of my mind, |
thought he’d brought this on himself.
The phone had fallen to the side. Amid the silence, we suddenly heard Soren’s worried voice.
| snapped out of my daze and searched for my phone. Finally, | spotted it.
Edward reached for it first, but | moved faster. | grabbed it and stepped back, putting space between us.
“Mr. Kenway!” | greeted.
It was rare to hear Soren-who usually spoke in a calm, mill, gentlemanly manner-sound so anxious. “Taylor!

| glanced warily at Edward. “Nothing. Just a little situation can handle it.”
“You sure about that? Should | send someone over?”
“That won't be necessary, Mr. Kenway. Anyway, | have to go for now. Ill talk to you later.”
| ended the call and watched Edward rise. Blood still seeped from his thigh, and his palm was slick with red.
Drops fell steadily onto the floor.
Concerned that his injury might fuel his anger, | warned him, “Leave, or Ill call the cops!”
He stood slowly, straightening his back. His eyes drifted to the blood on my arm, and his expression changed-
apathetic, angry, yet strangely concerned.
“You're hurt,” he said. “Shouldn’t we go to the hospital?”
“I'm fine,” | said sharply.
I'd already checked. My long sleeves had protected my arm from most of the blade, and it was nothing more
than a scratch.
Edward gritted his teeth against the pain. “The Kenways are more complicated than you think, Taylor. You'll
never be one of them. You need to stop holding onto that delusion.”
“I didn’t ask for your opinion,” | retorted.
He tried to take a step toward me, but his legs were shaky. It could have been the pain or the blood loss. Either
way, he ended up retreating.
| didn’t offer to help him up. Instead, | called the property manager.
Edward's pride wouldn't allow him to be escorted out by security.
With a bitter smile, he admitted defeat. “Fine then, Taylor. You're colder than | thought.
He straightened his back and limped out, his wounded leg dragging behind him.
| let out a relieved sigh after he left. Once I'd cleaned the blood from the floor, | took out my first-aid kit and
started tending to my own injury.

Soren called again.
| picked up and forced a lighthearted tone. “Hello, Mr. Kenway!”
“Taylor, what happened just now? Did Edward harass you? His voice was tense by the end of the sentence.
“He chere to talk about Maddison’s funeral, but it turned into a quarrel. Don’t worry. It's settled. He's gone
now.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No, but he was. My scissors fell and stabbed him during the altercation.” | didn’t think my injury was worth
mentioning.

Soren wasn't so easily fooled. “I’m asking about you, Taylor. Are you hurt?”
