own face.
Susie blinked in surprise. “Anna, why are you wearing a mask?”
“Nothing. | caught a cold. | don’t want to spread it to you. Do you like this pendant, Susie? Let's take it to the
window, in the sunlight. It looks even prettier.”
Thrilled, Susie nodded eagerly.
But Baron and Natalie could both see the trap. The breeze from the window carried the smoke straight toward
Susie.

rose to her feet, her steps stiff and unnatural as she walked out. Finn happened to be coming back from the
bathroom. Spotting her, he brightened and waved.
“Susie!”
But she didn’t even glance at him, walking straight past.
Hurt, Finn pouted and ran after her, grabbing her arm.
“Susie, where are you going? You can’t go that way! Teacher and the principal said it’s dangerous!”
He clung tightly to her.
A sudden glint of menace flashed through Susie's eyes.
