Chapter 386 A jet of dark blood burst from her lips, splattering across the cold floor of the interrogation room-a sight that sent a chill down anyone's spine.

Yet, even as her life ebbed away, a stubborn smile played at the corners of her mouth—a smile that spoke of relief, of release.

All she had to do was die, and everything would finally be over.

Mandy could be cleared of the murder charge and get her life back. Sean would be free from these painful memories, able to move forward with his career. Her grandmother and Grace wouldn't have to worry about her anymore.

Everyone could return to the lives they deserved. That was the value of her sacrifice-what she traded her life for. Claire closed her eyes, tears slipping silently from the corners.

When she opened her eyes again, she was in a hospital.

People crowded around her bed, but the first person she saw was Sean, sitting in a wheelchair.

Sean's face was ashen, his eyes rimmed red, and he stared at her without blinking.

Their gazes locked. Claire managed a faint smile. She tried to lift her hand to touch his face, but her strength gave out halfway.

Sean caught her hand, pressing it gently against his cheek. His voice was rough and broken. "Why did you do something so foolish?" Looking at this man, so worn down because of her, Claire's heart ached with guilt and sorrow. She tried to comfort him, her voice barely above a whisper. "Sean, I'm the one who's been holding you back. Promise me... when I'm gone, you'll move on. You'll forget about me, alright?" Sean couldn't hold back his tears any longer. They spilled down his cheeks, huge and uncontrollable.

His shoulders shook. The calm, composed man she knew was utterly undone by grief.

"You promised you'd marry me," he choked out. "How can you break your word now?" With effort, Claire brushed away his tears. Her fingertips barely grazed his cheek, but the pain in her heart was sharp and deep.

"Don't cry," she murmured, her voice still gentle, even as her body was wracked with pain. She tried to soothe him, as she always had.

Just then, Mandy pushed her way through the crowd, her eyes swollen, cheeks streaked with tears. She rushed to the bedside.

"Claire, why?" she sobbed.

"My life isn't worth anything. I don't care what happens to me. You didn't have to || Claire pressed a trembling hand over Mandy's mouth, refusing to let her finish.

"Mandy, I killed someone. I've already confessed to the police. If you make a mistake, you have to pay the price. My body's been failing for a long tnow. I just... I didn't want to keep suffering, so I chose to end it." She fixed Mandy with a burning, desperate stare.

Mandy was quick-she understood Claire's intention immediately.

"No... no, this isn't what I want. I never wanted you to do this!" Mandy's legs buckled, and she collapsed to her knees at Claire's bedside. She clung to Claire's arm, as if that alone could keep her from slipping away.

Her body shook violently. The only sounds she could make were choked, strangled sobs.

"Claire, please don't die. Don't leave me..." Her cries were raw, desperate.

preray, "If someone has to die, let it be me. Not you." The survival rate for drinking poison was almost nonexistent. The damage to the lungs was irreversible.

Mandy hugged Claire tightly, her thoughts spiraling: The The idea of Claire leaving this world was a pain sharper En than any wound.

Claire leaned closer, her lips brushing Mandy's ear, her voice barely audible. "Mandy let it end here. Go live your life. Please. Don't let my death be meaningless. This is all I can do for you." Mandy went rigid.

Let it end here? But Sophia and Garnett Brown were still alive.

How could it possibly be over?
